Do you feel pressured to post perfect photos on Instagram?

Do you feel pressured to post perfect photos on Instagram? A matter of coincidence. Yesterday I made an instagram post ( photo below) that was quite unplanned, a shot that usually would end up with the Oslo filter on my insta stories, instead foun…

Mondays

I have been under the weather the last few days and with so many things to be finished before Stockholm design week I can feel the pressure of time already. If I haven’t answered your email yet please forgive me, I am trying to prioritize but work…

The weekend plan

Our living room corner was just about the only part of the house this week that looked decent, and even then if you get too close you’ll see a light coating of dust on everything! I’m not going to pretend everything is perfect because it’s not and that…

At home with some of my favorite essentials

Since getting a bed in the bedroom (sneak peek of the bedroom)I feel the whole apartment has finally come together, it feels much more like home now than it did when I first moved in July. I love spending time in here now, and since I have been a little bit sick last few weeks I have been working from bed much more than I would normally do. I don’t have a speaker in Oslo for my bedroom so the new portable Beoplay P2 has become my best companion ( mine is in color Sand ). It doesnt have any controls on it, but tap it twice to pause any song ( double tap again to resume ) and shake it sideways to skip a song are all the controls I need :)  It also has a microphone so when I get calls I dont even need to pick up my phone! I always take it with me when I travel too, it is lightweight and then I can listen to music or podcasts or audio books while in my hotel room, its a win win. The sound is great as well for such a small speaker, it is now firmly on my essentials list.
To make the bedroom a little cosy, I like having a candle on the windowsill next to the bed (the bedroom has two big windows), and with some books and magazines, a mirror and a lamp the scene is almost complete.

On the window you might have noticed some products, they are from the Nuori face care line, the Perfecting face oil on the left and the Supreme moisture mask on the right. If you don’t know about Nuori already, apart from their super minimalistic design, what distinguishes them from other skincare is that their products are always fresh. Mine were mixed right before they were delivered and their ingredients are 100% natural. A lot of brands claim this to be true, but Nuori actually delivers, read more about it here if you want and I promise you , you will be converted.
Last but not least my top favorite brand Aesop launched a new perfume! ( They are currently launching a new website , I will link to it as soon as it is up! ). When it comes to how it smells, you should really visit one of their stores, it is a little too masculine for me but I love how it smells on my other half :)

What I gained from the loss of my father

This post is sponsored by Prudential Financial and Bloglovin’

Just when you think you’ve got life figured out, when you can set your actions to autopilot and live like a pro, when you can map out short term plans and are finally old enough to make them happen. Just when you’ve outgrown the rebellious stage of purposely resisting your parent’s advice to show them you can do things your own way. Then having become a parent yourself, find that you see your own mother and father for more than the dictators of your life you thought they were as a teen. Just when you can now see that they did their very best to love and protect you, as you are now attempting to do with your own small child. Just then, it takes a most unexpected turn.
That’s how I felt four years ago when my father passed away without warning. He was young, healthy, and strong with a good 40 years of life ahead of him. I don’t know, maybe even more. He was just beginning to settle into the role of a grandfather with my then three year old son, and I had never known he could blossom into such a nurturing and affectionate being, someone wanting to right all of the wrongs from his role as a father with the love and patience only a grandparent can possess. My father was the last person I worried about who always seemed to be invincible, and anyways, he was usually the one worrying about me. Then, one early Saturday morning in May, while I slept in peaceful ignorance next to my toddler son, the life of my dad ended abruptly.

That Saturday back in 2013 spurred me to later write a blog post about my feelings surrounding my loss which were still as fresh and raw as any open wound. I attempted to type in black and white the powerfully swirling cacophony of memories mixed with future fears. My mind bounced relentlessly back and forth from the past, where it tried desperately to retain any fragment of memory and experience I had with my father, then all the way to the distant future where I would have lived my life and raised my children without my father alive to witness it.
Looking back I experienced every classical stage of grief. It wasn’t possible to absorb the volume of my loss all at once or even during those first subsequent months. Even now after four years and 4 months and however many days until this is published, the loss continues to unfold in new ways as I experience personal milestones or watch the achievements of my children, as the world keeps spinning and humankind keeps moving forward one step at a time, knowing he should be here with us all the while. He is not though, he is not here to participate in any of them.
Not only do I miss the role he played as supportive father in my life but I miss his personality, his unique view of the world, his brash sarcasm, his ripening as a person over the course of time. Often I wonder what he would be doing now if he had never left us, what hobbies he would be into, what movies would he’d be excited to see, his opinion about the current political climate, and his even his graying hair.
I’ve had four years to process and try to understand my loss. There was a time when I would overthink the normally automatic behaviors of life. My brain was so exhausted from running laps around the thoughts of grief, that deciding what to eat or leaving the house put me into an emotional tailspin. During this time of barely functioning it felt that there was no end in sight. “Is this my new reality”, I would ask myself. “Will I ever be normal again?” and “What is normal now anyways?” I can’t tell you exactly how I got from that place to where I am now able to talk about my father in the past tense without crying every time. Able to tell my kids funny stories about him without feeling full of sorrow and overcome with emotion. Even to look at a photo of him and just smile, remembering only the good he left behind. There’s no way I would have thought something positive could come from something so painful, only bad and void and sadness could possibly result from losing someone that so greatly comprised my inner circle. Fortunately I was wrong.

Losing my father has changed me, that’s one thing I know for certain. I’ve never returned to the normal I once knew when I had a father, but I also no longer attempt to mimic the life I had when my father was alive. A new normal has had to be created over time. Like a graft in a tree, the old branch is not replaced but rather a new, different one diverges from the wound.
Now that grief has become more manageable I’ve been able to see the good which has come from losing my father. Spending time on those things that add value to my life is one of the biggest changes that has come in the last few years. This sounds like a no brainer but many things throughout the day are competing for our attention and it truly takes effort to edit out the nonessentials that add meaningless static to our lives. The things that keep us busy but not necessarily productive. I try often to focus on what matters most like spending time with my growing kids, working on tasks and jobs I’m passionate about, not overcommitting myself, and setting aside time for activities that simply give me joy. Doing more of what I love helps me to feel that the time I have is being spent in a way I won’t regret later. This often means saying “no” to people or offers that could deter me from the goal of creating a life with meaning and purpose.
Learning to say “no” to people, to overindulgence or to extra commitments that take up too much of my time is a practice. But each time I flex this muscle and turn something down that I know is not adding value to my life, the next time this needs to happen becomes a little easier. How effortlessly we get sucked into hours and hours on social media, or into another show we didn’t really need to watch, or even eating that extra cookie when you know eating just one was sufficient. These are the things I try to avoid now because they add up quickly and I don’t want to spend what time I have tied to things that aren’t truly important to me.

Something else I’ve learned in the wake of losing my dad is how important self care is. I hate to admit it but before I used to avoid visiting the doctor whenever possible. Scheduling an appointment or finding time to spend the afternoon in the doctor’s office were obligatory things I avoided if I could. Now I don’t hesitate as much, I ask a lot of questions, and I do a little of my own research to prevent a visit. I also try to eat as many whole foods as possible and work out a few times a week. Sometimes it’s as simple as buying a new candle or picking up a book I had intended to read weeks ago that makes me feel that I’m not totally neglected. Not fitness guru here, but before I might have procrastinated with these little self care basics. Now I make time for them knowing that being physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy for my children and family are one of the most paramount of priorities.
Loss has also propelled me to set higher goals for myself and for the future. Before my dad passed away I was in my late 20’s and still felt that I had all the time in the world. Considering the future was not a regular habit and my choices were mostly influenced by the present circumstances, what resources I had at the moment, and what I wanted in that moment. I’m not so much older now, but I feel I’ve become much better at long term planning and sticking to my goals.
Part of having that long term mindset is planning for the future. With a family of my own I have to think about staying physically and emotionally healthy for my kids but also about practical things like finances. I think much more about the long term effects of my financial choices and spend more time planning for future expenses than before. Not only do I keep these goals at the forefront of my mind but I aim a little higher, take a little more risk, and try new things. As someone who works freelance and who has irregular payment terms with each client, I’ve learned how imperative it is to be putting a portion of that away to save. Saving is probably my biggest financial goal each month, and we have several accounts so we can save separately for individual goals. One account can be for trips and travel while another may be for the kids’ activities. With a daughter in ballet and a son learning the piano there will be many costs associated with their lessons to be prepared for. Being a mom has also taught me to be prepared for the unexpected, which can also include unexpected expenses so really saving is also a necessity. Thinking big picture is about continuing to grow and set new goals for yourself as an individual, as a family, and not allowing a defeated mentality even in pain.

Losing my father is the saddest event I’ve ever experienced and happiness can seem like an emotion out of reach. However fleeting happiness may seem I truly believe we have a choice to be happy to a great degree. If someone is suffering or has recently experienced a loss I would not dare to tell them they have simply not chosen to be happy. For those of us who have a roof over our heads, food in our bellies, healthy friends and family, a safe place to call home, we have a choice. I work on this every day and sometimes each minute takes some effort. Before loss I felt a little more of a victim to my emotions. Now I know reframing my thinking, taking a deep breath, and looking for a new perspective on a tense situation can go a long way to helping me have more moments of happiness. It’s a conscientious choice I have to make. When I choose to make happiness a priority, when I choose a positive attitude in place of a negative one, everyone around me benefits.
I will forever be grateful to my father for the things he taught me in his life and also in his death. If he were still alive I don’t know if I would have spent as much effort as I have in remembering times with him, understanding who he was, and recalling what he taught me. Don’t misunderstand me though, I would bring him back in an instant if that was a real possibility, however I understand that he is gone. The pain is still there but simultaneously the joy of our memories and the life lessons I have learned from his absence since then have added to my life in ways he would have smiled proudly to hear about.

Salted Laccino

I have been trying to find a name for my favorite childhood drink that I still drink every morning to this date and I think finally I thought of one that seems very appropriate! I present you with Salted Laccino! It is really not complicated at all just warm up some milk,  add a pinch of sea salt and stir! My grandmother who lived in her farm would make it for me when I was really young, which is probably why I grew up thinking this is the way to drink your milk in the morning. She would get fresh goat milk and bring it to boil, adding a little bit of salt at the end. The way I prepare it is even easier, I just add milk and sea salt in the Nespresso frother and a few seconds later my morning drink is ready. During winter ( or a cold day ) I will have some sort of porridge while during warm days I will possibly skip the salted laccino and make a cold brew with milk instead. I am not big on breakfast, I prefer instead eating something an hour or two later. Again something I have been doing since I was very young, possibly because I would wake up so late to go to school, that I only had time for a rushed milk and then I would eat during breaks. Old habits die hard :)

Friday Thoughts

//Photography and Styling by Katerina Dima

Lately I have lost track of time, so it came as a surprise that today its friday. Between tax season, renovating downstairs and keeping up with the blog and freelance work, I am so behind that I doubt I will have any time during weekend to relax. And with some press events coming to Oslo next week that I will be attending, I will definitely have my hands full next few days. Looking forward to sharing some highlights from the trip, as always the best place if you want to keep up is my Instagram. When I travel I always update my stories daily, it is a great way to show where I am or what I am doing in a fun and refreshing way!

Birthday Girl

Today its my birthday and I treated myself to some gifts. Some magazines and books that were missing from my collection and a new Byredo perfume and bath products. The magazines arrived yesterday (photo above) while the Byredo additions probably will be here by the end of the week. When you shop for yourself time is irrelevant! Even though I am quite busy, I am trying my hand in a cake, the recipe of which I found in the Kinfolk Table book, Hummingbird cake with Cream cheese frosting. Fingers crossed! If there is any left by tomorrow I ll be sure to snap some photos :) And with these few words, I need to rush and get the cake out of the oven and then finish off my new media kit!

Back from Oslo

I came back from Oslo yesterday night, however I just started unpacking my suitcase. I did a little bit of shopping (stopped by Byredo, Acne, COS and Aesop), but I was also lucky to receive in the form of press samples some early copies of books I wanted to purchase as soon as they were available (courtesy of New Mags , with my thanks).

The first book, by Katariina Lamberg , Sacré Cœur, is a compact travel guide to Paris ( a sneak peek can be seen below). It includes maps, locations for restaurants, cafes, even ice cream shop locations, all neatly arranged in an A5 book that can fit in my bag. A must have next time I visit Paris , which will hopefully not be too long!

The Green Home Book does not need many introductions, but with a little more than 4 weeks before launch I am happy I get to peruse through it and finally have in one place all the care tips for all my plants. While it acts as a guide, it is so beautifully made, the photos and content so well curated, that it fits any coffee table easily as well.

All books can be found at New Mags in Norway and various other sellers around Scandinavia and the rest of the world.

The small things

//Photography and Styling by Katerina Dima

It is the small gestures that can make any day start well, and today I woke up to a small surprise in my mailbox ( I usually wear my robe and then barefoot I dare the cold and the snow to check my mailbox for some reason). Studio Esinam surprised me with their yearly planner in beige in A5 size, which will have a permanent spot on my office desk from now on. I had already purchased my 2017 planner ( in A6 size) that is already quite full if you can believe it, so this new addition will be perfect for anything extra and quick notes while I can keep the smaller one in my bag on the go. Since January and February are months that see a lot of travel ( due to press events and fairs) it is always good to prepare early!

Below some impromptu snaps from my instagram story I shared right after I received the package, as taken from my phone.

2017 Goals

Happy 2017 everyone! I didn’t intend on making a blogpost today, but as I sat down to write on my new 2017 planner ( I should mention that I have been using it for at least 2 months now due to noting down scheduled tasks for the new year), I thought about some of my top new years resolutions and how instead I would prefer to have goals. Goals are something I can work to achieve, something that is more of a journey towards what I want rather than an abstract idea that is a resolution. So many times I am trying to get from 0 to 100 and I set myself an unreasonably small amount of time to achieve this, so I am hoping that setting up goals instead will also let me enjoy the journey there too as opposed as focusing only in the final destination.

Some of the goals I would like to achieve this year include big and small things, some of the bigger ones are the following.

:: A bad habit I am going to break |  Stress Eating
:: A new skill I am going to learn |  Skiing
:: I am going to do better at |  Time management
:: A place I’d like to visit |  Reykjavik , Iceland

I have made a much bigger list than this with smaller things I would like to happen, and this time I am going to focus on starting on the things I want to achieve, even if I am halfway into my goal it still counts as a tick on my list.

//Photography and Styling by Katerina Dima

I hope this year is a happy and productive year, it does not have to be great but I will feel amazing if at the end of it I can look back and know I achieved most of my goals.

5 Ways to Instantly Refresh Your Wardrobe

5 ways to instantly refresh your wardrobe for Spring Wearing: Dolce & Gabbana Velvet Pumps from YOOX The timeless optimism that comes with springtime – the cool sunrise light slivers on the floor, flower clouds billowing across once bleak landscapes, and lively birds, perhaps landing on your hand in Disney princess style – isn’t lost even on us southern hemisphere dwellers. When that time comes around, a well-documented phenomenon occurs among women (and stylish men) all over the world. Like the migration instincts of south-flying swans, an urge takes over to dismiss the fashions and style notions of the year before, and look to a new and improved sartorial identity. When last year’s wardrobe suddenly feels monotonous, and those impulse purchases in pursuit of a trend turn into unsightly faux pas to be swept to the deepest, darkest corners of the closet, you needn’t start from square one. Here are 5 ways to instantly refresh your wardrobe for spring. 1 Introduce a new statement accessory Sometimes all you need is one amazing new accessory to give new life to a tired wardrobe. Choose something unique, and completely different from what you already have or have ever considered wearing – because spring […]

Happy Christmas And A Present For You

Happy Christmas And A Present For You

It took me more than a while to get into the Holiday spirit this year. It usually takes a little time for me to fall into that frame of mind — with family being miles away from us the excitement for celebrating fades very quickly in this house, although, we always seem to manage have a decent time.

This year, we’re enjoying a gift-free Christmas. We’re also not hosting a party this year and instead we will play the roll of guests. We’ve never had a Holiday with no presents and I’m hoping this experiment allows us to hug each other tighter and to focus all our energies into loving one another rather than having to divide our emotions with the expectations of material things.

I won’t lie… I’ve thoroughly enjoyed not feeling the rush to buy presents or the worry that someone would over-spend on a present for me. It’s been lovely to stay at home instead of pushing my way through crowded markets and malls but what I’ve loved the most is channeling that time into one very important thing: The science behind the perfect Chocolate Cloud Cake — which will be my contribution to the party, so… wish me luck.

Having said that this will be a gift-free Holiday for us, it doesn’t mean that I will miss the opportunity to thank you* with a gift this Holiday. Each one of you who comes to my blog, leaves a comment, emails me, follows me on social media or that simply lurks around deserves a big virtual hug and an extra one for all your light and the good energy you send our way on the daily.

Get a 25% discount on non-promotional themes using the code: HOLIDAY25 and the same discount on my book 30 Days To Minimal Blogging using the code: CHANGE at check out. A lot of people have been telling me they are saving the book for this break so they can read it intently and silently. I hope you get to do that as well.

The biggest gift for me would be that you read my book and send through a review so I can feature you on my book’s landing page. I want to know how the book is changing your vision, how it’s helping you but most importantly how much meaning is adding to your life and blog.

Enjoy a wonderful, meaningful and love-filled Christmas break with your loved ones.
Hugs,
Ana

This Weekend in Pictures

December has been a quiet month by choice, most of the days I have spend at home and the town around. January and February are going to be very busy months due to press launches and fairs and I do not expect to spend so much time at home. There is much to be appreciated when it comes to quiet comfort and I have tried to make the most of it while I still can. Since this weekend was the last advent of December I got some extra unexpected gifts in my mail, some hand soaps from TangenTGC, a gift much appreciated since I was running out of my favorite Aesop and was wondering if I could get a new one by mail before the holidays. The Georg mirror by Skagerak also arrived (it has been on my Novembers wishlist and I was right, it does fit my newly renovated bedroom like a glove). It is the perfect spot to get ready in the morning and this is usually how I have been starting my day as of late.

Speaking of the new bedroom, in a rare sighting, Milo has also been enjoying it immensely. Maybe it is the new soft linen throw ( the Crush Oro linen throw by Hale Merchantile Co) because she is always on top of it. It comes in many beautiful colors and although it was difficult to chose, the Oro hue won me over.

First attempts on making an avocado flower. I think I should have cut it in even thinner slices because it was very hard to wrap around itself. Still delicious no matter the shape, and if you want to try it out here is an easy very good explanation video.

Wrapping up the weekend, when it comes to the weather it was a beautiful one. We woke up both days in a completely foggy town,  so much so that it looked quite airy since it was hard to see even 15 meters ahead. Long walks in the mist are very unappreciated, so we made the most of it while coming back to a warm home.

Birthday Thoughts

Birthday Thoughts

It’s my birthday today and I cannot help but to go into full introspection mode and think about how the last year for me has been. If you follow me, you know how terrible it was at times… but for the gift of resilience and for the constant love I’ve gotten from my little one all year long, I’m profoundly grateful.

Clearly, nobody wants to go through loss and hardship the way I did this year – but deep in my heart I know and understand how momentary everything is. So much so that the only way to have no regrets is to learn to embrace people wholeheartedly. To love our families, to make material things secondary, to hug people tight… and to be kinder to ourselves.

I have 2 birthday wishes: one is cake and… the other one is to be able to pass on some of my happiness and feeling of being celebrated and loved today.

There’s a code for you ready to be used. Use the code CAKE at checkout to get my book, 30 Days To Minimal Blogging at 25% off today.

Scandinavian Christmas Gift Wrapping

When it comes to wrapping presents there are many ways to do it, I personally prefer the simplicity of the Scandinavian way so this years theme was very much based on that style. I used paper drop cloth (usually used for masking floors while painting), ribbons in various sizes ( mostly black, navy and white color), some string and name tags that matched the color of the paper, and for decoration I used some branches of cotton and fresh eucalyptus. I wanted the presents to also have a personal feel, so every one of them is wrapped and styled slightly different, so they are all unique.

I also wrapped a few of the smaller ones with linen napkins (mine came from Hale Merchantile & Co). This is a great way of wrapping a present in a very sustainable way for no extra waste, but also for something extra in the form of the napkin.
There are so many more unique ways to wrap the presents using the materials I used, I also just wrapped them with big ribbons, you can see more of the presents under my early Christmas tree in this post

Travel Diaries : Bergen Mini Guide

Bergen is always a great destination for short trips, unless you already live there, with some great places to visit, eat and stay. I spend most of my time outside, shopping, walking around the city, watching movies, visiting some places I had on my wishlist for a long time, while any time I could spare (or when the rain was too heavy) I was to be found at a cafe working away on my Macbook. I shared quite a lot of videos on my instagram stories but some highlights (and my favorite restaurants) I am also sharing below, for anyone that wishes to visit Bergen.
I stayed at Scandic Ørnen, a relatively new hotel in Bergen right next to the central bus station. The positioning is great since the bus station has also a quite reasonably priced car parking, so it is easy to leave the car there for the entirety of the trip, while it is a short walk to the hotel and the very center of Bergen. All rooms in Ørnen are comfy and spacious with big windows overlooking Bergen. I especially love the minimal office corners as seen above.

Favorite places to eat while in Bergen :

::For a great lunch or dining experience I highly recommend visiting Lysverket restaurant. The space is designed and furnished by Københavens Møbelsnedkeri, while the menu is superb always prepared with freshly foraged seasonal ingredients.
::Another of my favorite spots to eat is Zupperia, and as the name suggests you can find some of the most amazing soups to eat on a rainy day. Tom Ka Gai and Eksotisk Drøm are my top choices when I visit, do try them!
::I also always stop by Sumo for sushi or Asiatic warm dishes. Pad Thai Noodles are great for those that do not love raw food as much while any sushi combo will satisfy sushi lovers.
::Last but not least for a quick bite or a normal menu, the best burger in town in my opinion is Royal Gourmet Burger and Gin. Try the Gourmet Burger (Brie, bacon ,mustard and honey, truffle oil) with one of their famous Gin combos.

Walking in Bergen is an experience on its own, however having a purpose is always better for me. For beauty/fashion shopping I always visit Pepper ( Acne, Aesop, Byredo are a few of my favorite brands Pepper carries), for interior shopping it is almost a crime not to visit Illums Bolighus, while around Bergens Blue stone (one of the main squares) you can find many malls and shopping streets with just about everything you might need. Bergen combines the charm of a small town with its cobblestone streets and small passages and wooden houses, with the flexibility of a big city with its shopping centers and the many activities to enjoy.

And if you are as lucky as me to go by Voss area on your way towards Bergen and back ,you will also experience one of the most idyllic Norwegian tours. During winter you are guaranteed to go by the most beautiful snowy sceneries . Just pop old ballads on your speakers and enjoy the ride.

Winter Scenes

Since I talked about how winter already here in my last post, I thought it would be very appropriate to share some photos I took while on a long walk while there was snow falling. I always feel like there is magic in the air when snow is slowly falling, whether it is in the city or a rural area. Next week I will be spending some days in Bergen and I do hope it is snowing instead of raining, although since it is Bergen after all, I highly doubt it. Some Christmas shopping is on my to do list, but also a little relaxation , though you will probably find me in Starbucks working while not out and about!

First Snow

The first snow fell this weekend, finally the mountains got all white and I can justify wearing a hat and a thick woolen scarf before going out.Surely who can resist a walk in the snow? I cannot help but drift a little bit when it is snowing outside like that, however there is so much to do in the house (painting weekend). Time to roll up my sleeves and stop looking outside the window, I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Daily Skincare Routine

//Photos by Katerina Dima
My daily skincare routine has always been very simple, but I find essential to try new products especially when they come with hearty recommendations. This is how I discovered Aesop and for the last year I have been using their line almost exclusively. Latest purchases from last time I was in Oslo (other than the London travel kit that I talked about in my Packing essentials), a Parsley Seed facial cleanser(200ml), a Mandarin Facial hydrating cream (120ml) and the Rind Concentrate Body Balm in a tube (120ml). When it comes to my morning routine, I simply wash my face with the Parsley seed cleanser using a brush, then apply some of the Mandarin cream. If I know I am staying home for a couple of hours however, I will instead wash my face with a skincare soap bar from Diptyque, then apply an oil serum from Lancome. Those two steps are enough for me, I really cannot commit to a more elaborate beauty morning routine!

Parisian finds

Finally I am back from all the fairs and vacations, and although I had a great time, I am quite happy to be back. I have spend most of my day today unpacking and organizing, and one of the first things I went looking into my bags were the ceramic spoons I bought at Merci store in Paris. I would have loved to shop more however my bags were already too heavy from having packed for a months worth of travelling. I had been looking for ceramic spoons for a while (usually this type is mostly widely sold) so when I saw the Serax ones at Merci I immediately reached out for them. I got two white teaspoons and two white coffee scoops, white being the only color that was available for now. Tip : These will also make for a great gift , either alone or along with a coffee set for coffee enthusiasts.

Cold Coffee with frozen coffee ice cubes

Just when we thought autumn was in full swing , summer made a come back. Cold coffee it is then! Tip : fill a glass with milk then drop frozen ice cubes in to slowly melt. Delicious! The cubes start to melt immediately and depending on how strong coffee flavor you prefer you might want to wait for a few seconds and stir first. I use from 2 to 4 coffee ice cubes that I have frozen overnight and prefer my glass to be filled with skimmed milk. If you like coffee without milk you can make a cold brew coffee then use the coffee ice cubes to keep it cold but also maintain the consistency. Ice cubes water coffee down as they melt, why not use frozen coffee cubes instead? Tip :  For an extra flavor, also freeze hot chocolate for frozen chocolate cubes!

Packing Essentials : Aesop

I have just a few days at home to prepare for the next few trips to Stockholm, then back to Oslo, then Paris then Santorini and Athens, so I thought I should start early and pack things I will not be using until I go. Samples are always a good idea when traveling, any disposable commodities or travel sized products I already use at home. While at Oslo , just after the Kähler‎ press launch ended, I decided to walk back to my hotel, and since I had already spotted the new Aesop store earlier,it was the perfect opportunity to get the travel kit I planned on July’s wishlist. I have been using the Boston kit however the lovely assistant suggested the London kit for my skin instead so I decided to give it a go. Some shoes, clothes and sleep essentials will go in by tomorrow although I always pack my make up essentials about 10 minutes before I step out of the door. I find that I almost always forget something when I pack earlier, so I have made it a habit to put in my travel make up case the products I use as soon as I am done applying them on my face. No checklists needed and this way I make sure I never forget something important!

Breakfast for one

Having breakfast on my own can be one quite an enjoying part of my day, although I do love the company as well when I can have it. Workdays however it is not uncommon that my routine will be very similar, wake up, go for a daily run, return for breakfast then start my working day. Favorite breakfast to eat is of course half an avocado on bread or some sort of cracker and an egg. Simple yet nutritious. And I have to confess, most of the times I just omit the bread completely and spoon the avocado right from its shell. While the world went crazy over avocado it seems overnight(or the last few instagram years of growth), I have been spooning my avocados since I can remember myself. Trust me, it is the best way to eat them! (Though I still haven’t tried the new grilling them with an egg craze..)

Interview in Bolig Magazinet

Today I realized my interview with Bolig Magasinet is up on their website, so I made myself a coffee and decided to enjoy this morning while reading it. The post is here if you want to read it as well, you will find some of my favorite photos but also I have answered some questions that you might not see elsewhere. New month, new week, new day.

I find Mondays are easier if I start working from bed. Whoever thought a portable computer is a good idea deserves more credit than they get. Usually I try to go for my daily run as soon as I wake up but today I will postpone it for a few hours. I hope rain wont ruin my plans for later. Here’s to a brand new month, week and day!

Working Weekend

The pros and the cons of being self employed : more often than not the weekends end up being working days. August and September are going to be very busy months, there are so many fairs and press events to attend to, my calendar is almost full. However it is going to be so much fun at the same time, I can hardly contain my excitement. This weekend is dedicated in planning ahead, I do not want to miss any of the events in my planner so I am in the process of creating lists all the brands I want to visit, which halls they are located, noting down flying dates, hotels, routes, renting cars etc. And since I will be in Paris, I have to visit some of the places in the Cereal city guide. This weekend is shaping up to be more fun than work, I like it!

Last Peonies

The last of my peonies, a single bud that for some reason took too long to bloom, is all that is left from a full bouquet of my pink peonies. Peony season is probably my favorite when it comes to seasonal flowers, I find them so delicate yet I can fill up a vase very easily with just a few buds. Their aroma as well is irresistible, I always try to have them close especially when I am working. Add a bowl of yogurt with some dried goji berries and cacao nibs and I am happy camper in my own living room.

Moments with Stelton : Enjoying an afternoon coffee with friends or alone

Ad // Sponsored post in collaboration with Stelton. All opinions are my own.
There are moments you want to share with friends and moments you enjoy alone. For the midsummer afternoon coffee I prepared the table with a variety of warm tea and coffee, milk on the side, fruits and dessert, and added flowers to brighten the mood since it has been raining non stop for all week. With the temperature a little lower, everyone is sure to enjoy warm coffee and tea, and the new lavender color of the Stelton EM77 vaccum jug fitted perfectly with the fresh peonies on the table and the mood I wanted to convey. I brought the electric kettle straight from the kitchen so it would be easier to poor hot water for our teas, the sleek design blends perfectly with the table styling. All in all, it was a beautiful afternoon and the rain didn’t bother us at all!
When not with friends however I enjoy my moments alone just as well. With a full EM77 with coffee or chocolate, some chocolate bonbons on the side, I can spend countless afternoons either perusing magazines or working late. I find tending to small details always lifts up my mood, so when I discovered the new Peak brass bonbonniere from Stelton I was more than happy to fill it upwith bonbons and make it a permanent addition on my coffee table.

For more Stelton moments with the EM77 vacuum jug, the peak bonbonniere, the Emma electric kettle and the Emma tableware, feel free to check Stelton instagram account at Stelton Design.

Caramelized Granola

Today I decided to share a tip with you on home made caramelized granola that will change the way you see and eat granola. While granola arguably is great as an idea for breakfast, unfortunately the store bought kind is filled with sugar and other artificial flavors in order to make it tastier than when we make it on our own. I find that a teaspoon of sugar is not the worst I can eat during a whole day so I mix my own granola in a bowl, then warm a pan where I drop a teaspoon of brown sugar. Wait until it turns into liquid caramel, take off the stove and immediately stir in the granola mix I just prepared. I mix well so it forms a little lump, then I spread on non stick cooking paper and wait for it to cool completely. When it has cooled down I roughly chop it to pieces with my hands, add in a bowl with as much milk as I want and some choice fruits and enjoy my own caramelized granola. The result is mouthwatering, the granola is crunchy and flavorful while the milk after a few seconds will taste like home made caramel. It is a great combination if you have a couple of extra minutes when you get up in the morning, or you can even prepare this from the previous day and make extra batches as well. It keeps for a long time in an airtight container. Some ingredients for the granola : chia seeds, rolled oats, dried coconut, cinnamon, flax seeds, poppy seeds. I have all these in separate airtight containers in my kitchen so I mix and match different mixes every time. Try it, its so easy and so flavorful!

Collection: Stillness

Collection: Stillness

I’ve been wracking my brain trying to put my thoughts into words and have you somehow know what’s been going on in my life for the past year and more importantly the past week.

I had decided to come back to blogging as soon as I was ready but I realized just a few minutes ago that most of you have been with me for a long time, through thick and thin and have celebrated with me my achievements and happy moments – so I couldn’t just sweep this one under the rug and pretend it didn’t happen.

For over a year my dad suffered from cancer, I won’t tell you all the details but as you could imagine, there’s a reason why people refer to it as a “battle”. Being a continent away from home and not being able to be close to him when he was undergoing surgeries, treatment, memory loss and a million other things, was the biggest, most anxiety-inducing roller coaster I’ve been on in my life. Every call, every message, every email caused a panic attack and it continued to be like that for a year.

Earlier this year the treatments and surgeries took their toll on my father and they discovered that after a long period of chemo, he still had cancer and was sent back home to spend his last days with his loved ones. In a matter of minutes I got the news that he was suffering from pneumonia and then it sunk in that he was going to pass away before I could even try to be there with him.

He passed away on Sunday evening. I felt a mix of relief that he wasn’t going to suffer the way he had and a deep pain that my father wasn’t going to be with us any longer, that he wasn’t going to enjoy the company of his wife, children and grandchildren that he loved so much. Weirdly enough, I wanted him to be able to comfort us. I needed my father as he was passing away.

I realized on Monday that we’d gone through so much and I had been trying to push myself above and beyond my limits, blogging on days when I felt torn inside, obsessing over the quality of work I do for my sponsors, writing a book while feeling physically out of breath from all the emotions running through my body and fighting so hard so that my business didn’t go up in flames while my life felt exactly like that.

Clearly, I understand I’m not the only person who has gone through this and the only person who will ever go through it, but as I write these words, they feel unreal to me – that I won’t see him again and at the same time, liberating. I hope you understand why I’d battle between telling you and keeping this to myself.

The fact that you know I’m not a slacker, that I do love what I do, that I do want to continue… and I want to launch that book… and the urge to continue designing beautiful blogs is still alive in me. I needed a moment of stillness, a time of silence I haven’t had in a long time. I cannot in any way say I’m “recharged” but there’s more calmness withing me.

I want to be able to get through this and make my father proud. I’m sure this black cloud will lift one day but in the meantime, I thank all of you for being kind and understanding, for still giving me the chance to work with you and for your kind and healing words and prayers.

Only Deco Love : My Photoshop Actions

Just a quick line to let you know that my photoshop actions are up again on my Etsy shop! The package includes several standalone actions for brightening up a photo. They also remove some of the yellowish tint that often sneaks in especially when there is no option of adjusting white balance in the camera. You can see a recent before and after above but also I thought it would be fun to share some other ones as well below! Is the before photo as seen above “bad”?I like the tone of the before but  I personally need it to be much brighter and this is where my actions come in. They are an automated process of quite a few editing steps that would usually take me more than 15min to replicate but now I only need to press the Play button and I get the same results in mere seconds. If you like the results you can find my actions here. Please be aware that these photoshop actions only work with Photoshop and not Elements or any other Adobe program.

Goji berry and Chocolate Yogurt Lunch

Whereas for breakfast of lunch, or even as a snack, Greek yogurt has always been on top of preferred list. One of my favorite combinations is with Goji berries and some chocolate drops. For an extra punch, blend the goji berries for a few seconds, use a shiv to separate the big chunks from the powdery smaller pieces. Mix the powder goji with the yogurt and fill a bowl with it. Then mix the bigger chunks of goji with a tablespoon of chocolate drops and sprinkle that mix on top of your yogurt. You will get a beautiful result as seen above and the taste is well worth the extra effort!

Busy day ahead

Some stills from my workspace. As I am spending all the day here I thought I should share some of the details. Not everything can be seen, however there are many notepads, book keeping, and a lot of folders hidden in plain view. Hot coffee and Macbook are my essentials for today. If you could see on my screen you would take on the research I am doing for a new DSLR camera (Canon or Nikon at tthis point) but also a smaller one (Olympus Pen or Leica) to have on hand when out and about while I am also looking for accessories such as leather straps etc. I got to try the Olympus Pen F and I fell in love with it, it was hard for me to return it a few hours later. There are so many situations where I just don’t want to carry my DSLR with me, and these are the times I feel I miss a small but powerful camera to fill the gap. I have also heard great things about the Leica D-Lux though, and the new grey color of its body makes me swoon! It will be a tough choice but I think I will be happy with either of them, I will shortly let you know which one I chose. Either way, how beautiful is this leather strap for either the Olympus or the Leica?

Catching up and my minimal strawberry mint smoothie.

First weekend back home and I have a lot to catch up with. After a month of perpetual travelling, from Milan during Design week, then Finland for the blogging awards, then Greece for two weeks, I am finally home for an entire month and it is going to be a busy one. I decided to take a few weeks off to rest so now I am ready to share with you everything I have been up to and all the news that are to come next few weeks! For today, since the weather was great, I decided to make a strawberry mint smoothie, very minimal, light and delicious!
For a minimal Strawberry Mint Smoothie :
Add a few frozen whole strawberries in your blender.Add half a cup of cold tap water (or more if you prefer a lighter consistency). Add 2 fresh mint leafs. Blend until smooth.
I add no dairy or any sort of granola in this particular smoothie, I find that the flavors are just great on their own, the mint gives a distinct fresh flavor while it also sweetens. You can drink this when you are thirsty or just take it with you to sip while working or on a hike.Either way, it is great for any occasion and since it is so light having double or triple portion is almost recommended! If you have any great smoothie recipes leave a comment below, summer is coming and I love smoothies!

How Not To Kill Plants

How Not To Kill PlantsThe older I get the more I feel like I’m failing at life by killing everything green that comes into my home. I’ve mastered killing indoor plants in such way that succulents have passed away in my living room. I’m actually a …

Marble Love

Can you spot my Macbook in this photo? I am back in Greece for a couple of days and if there is one interior detail I have missed is the marble floors of my childhood home. I took a few days off to recharge my batteries and rest, it is so easy to forget yourself when in the sun and the soft sea breeze. I know a lot of you want to see Athens from my eyes so stay tuned, I will take you for a walk with me very soon indeed.

Travel Tips for your Essentials : Protect your Macbook, iPhone

Some details on my coffee table while packing yesterday. My Mac and a wireless headset always follow me when I travel for more than 2 to 3 days plus a wireless mouse, while a watch and my phone are few of the essentials that go without saying. Tips for you based on experience:
1. I use a marble vinyl skin for my Mac, it protects it while looking a little bit different. Even though I have gotten tired of the specific skin I still chose to leave it until I come back home from travelling since it is offers amazing protection against scratches etc.
2. I also use a cover for my iPhone and I m glad I do since it is so easy to drop from my bag when I rummage around to find documents, sunglasses, lip balm or hand creams or anything that is in the bottom of my bag.
3. While the headphones on the photo look great I am on the hunt for a pair that also offer noise cancellation/reduction. After having to fly several times per month I have learned to appreciate as much quiet time as I can get or even have less background noise when I am trying to listen to music or watch a movie. I haven’t decided on a specific pair or brand yet, when I do I ll let you know!
4. Lots of flying companies now have reduced their requirements for on board luggage. I am also on the hunt for one that will fit new required sizes while it is portable with decent space. I am looking at Rimowa and I have to say some of their designs and materials look amazing!
Time to leave Starbucks and head to my gate, I will be on my Instagram or Snapchat (katerina.dima) if you want to connect with me next few days or follow the Blogger awards :)For now on my Snapchat you can see flights, airports and lots of hot chocolate snaps! Catch you later :)

Rotonda Della Besana : Milan Design Week 2016

This week I was shooting for an assignment in the Rotonda Della Besana in Milan during Design week 2016. While my brief was very specific and didn’t leave me with a lot of time to otherwise shoot for the blog, I couldn’t resist snapping along the way a few photos to show you my whereabouts.
As soon as I arrived in location I realized how much time and effort has gone into transforming the old 17th century Rotonda into a restaurant/showroom with old and new Tom Dixon products, alongside the sponsors for the show.
The Restaurant is a series of four sculptural kitchens and four radical dining halls designed by Tom Dixon to fit the 17th century Rotonda della Besana church in Milan. Arabeschi di Latte prepared the food for the 4 different kitchens that guests could enjoy while observing cutting-edge cooking techniques and the food preservation methods while they ate.
The dining areas spread between the four wings of the Rotonda so guests are encouraged to rotate through them in order to have a 4 course full meal. Every wing was designed with an element in mind, Air, Fire,Ice and Earth and the food was directly inspired by those principles. The Restaurant is a space where all of this is broken up and deconstructed Tom Dixon says, and by personal experience I can attest to the simplicity and beauty of the thought process that led to the design. On the first night a VIP dinner of 120 guests while the Rotonda was closed allowed me to enjoy myself this unique dining experience and spectacular food presentation.
While working I spent my breaks moving from one wing to another during the day, having my lunch in the kitchen of my choice. All around visitors would either make short stops to eat or drink as well, or even sit and enjoy the space while working, shop from the Tom Dixon shop and finally take a tour around the Rotonda.
My only regret is that I didn’t have time to visit this years Milan Design Show, however I am hoping to see everyone I missed during September in Paris!

Travelling Light : What is in my in flight bag

Tomorrow I am flying to Stavanger to celebrate Møbelgalleriet 30 years of Anniversary. I am really looking forward to meeting with everyone and having what is promising to be an amazing afternoon with co hosts Vipp, By Lassen, Louis Poulsen and Fredericia. I am packing light since I am only spending one night, so a simple in flight cabin luggage will do.
My bag essentials for a short stay include some cotton pads to remove my make up at night, a lip balm (just got the Kiyoko lip balm and can’t wait to try it, the size is flight perfect), Aesop samples with hydrating cream, serum, eye cream and lotion, my favorite perfume, a hand cream (my palms get so dry), earphones, an iphone power bank, wallet and somewhere in the bag you will also find my Dior mascara and an Aesop rinse free lotion. Half of these will be in my handbag, while the rest will fit in my luggage along with my iPad along with an extra pair of clothes and a hair straightener. I almost prefer travelling without wearing make up but I cannot travel with bad hair.
If you want to see snippets of the day I will be taking lots of snaps so feel free to find me there! User : katerina.dima

How to Grow an Avocado tree : Scandinavian Style

I have been trying to grow and avocado tree from its stone for a few months now and I was delighted when a few weeks ago finally the first stone split apart to reveal some basic roots and a small stem. I tried various methods found over the internet and for a while it seemed to work for everyone but me. I had left my stones in water and soil for more than 3 months at that point (they are supposed to germinate in a month or so), with no results and I was about to give up when I decided to try something that might work out and to my delight it did! I was happy to find out I was not the only one with troubles about this so I decided to share my method with tips and tricks on how to grow an avocado tree on the blog today.
Method :
1. To grow and avocado tree we just need an avocado , any size will do but I prefer medium sized ones.
2. Carefully cut in the middle and remove the stone, then wash under lukewarm water to clean all the avocado bits.
3. Immediately take a sharp knife and start peeling off the skin. Make a small incision, as you see from the photos the skin is actually quite thin, and peel off.
4. Prepare a shallow cup and fill it with some soil and water, or just water.
5. Drop the avocado stone in, the pointier edge should be facing upwards. If you used part soil then the stone will easily balance in the soil. If you are only using water then the stone will be tilting a little. Just make sure the cup is shallow so the stone touches the bottom, I used a small Ikea bowl for that.
6. If you used part soil, pour more water so the stone is always halfway swimming in it. If you only used water then the stone needs to be always be submerged halfway. Every few days when the water turns greenish it is best to change it.
Germination process takes about a month or a little more so be patient, follow my tips and tricks and soon you will have your own avocado tree :)
Tips, tricks, important information and when to repot:
1. Put your avocado stones in a warm and moist spot. Avocados need warmth, but it is most important during germination period. I left mine near a window in the living room and they refused to show any signs of growth for more than 3 months. Once I moved them into the constantly hot bathroom it only took them a couple of weeks to take roots. Probably the laundry room will work just as well.
2.While all my stones have grown, the ones that I grew from start to finish in the small glass greenhouse as seen above have shown twice the growth (and continue growing faster than the rest) and look much more healthy. The dome helps capture the moisture inside as the water naturally evaporates, creating a breathing chamber that helps the germination process. Once the stone was sprouted small roots and the stem reaches the top (about 8 to 10cm), it is safe to re pot it.
3. Prepare a pot, fill it halfway with soil and remove soil from the center with a tablespoon. Carefully lift the stone by the stem and hold it on the level you wish to repot it. With your other hand use the tablespoon to fill the pot around the stone until it is buried halfway in. Be very careful not to break any of the very fragile roots. Once in the pot, water the soil until you can see water coagulating around the stone. Now you only need to wait for the first leaves to grow and remember, at this point it needs a lot of daylight and sun!

I am close to having to prune the top leaves, a week later after I took some of the photos as seen above, the avocado has already quite a big stem and the leaves have grown more than a 2 cm. This is a whole new experimentation chapter though so as soon as I have tested the results I will share again!
I hope this is going to be helpful to everyone that has as much trouble as me growing an avocado, but for those that haven’t yet tried to, now is your chance to do so. You only need an avocado :)

Afternoon tea at home

7:20. Ready for afternoon tea. Times like this I wish I was back in UK in a manor hotel where they serve evening tea with scones, butterscotch cakes,English muffins and assortments of chocolates. A tradition I think I should seriously consider adopting instead of afternoon meal.

Make A Promise

Fashion they say.. isn’t just about the clothes.  It’s not often enough that we receive the opportunity to manifest something we love into creating positive change, the kind of change that can save lives and alter the pathway to a future generation. Over time I’ve been fortunate enough to grow a close relationship with Louis Vuitton and 2016 […]

Avocado Stones to Trees : My Story

I have been trying to grow and avocado tree from October. I read all about it and how to, it seemed I did everything right but my avocado stones seemed to just not want to sprout for more than 3 months. I was told it wasn’t the method but the fact that some avocados are engineered not to grow trees from their stones. It was about a month ago I decided to change things around and try what I thought would work with the same stones, and it did! I have grown 4 little avocado stems successfully and they keep growing 2 cm (more than half an inch) every single day after I replanted them in their pots. If you are curious or you want to grow an avocado tree yourselves check back here in a few days and I will have all the details for you, with photos and and all the tips and tricks you will need for 100% success , I promise.

Only Deco Love on Bloglovin

Hello everyone! With Instagram changing how they filter your feed without giving us an option (posts will no longer be chronological but based on a hidden algorithm) , I am fighting back by following all my favorite Instagramers blogs that I hadn’t been following already. One of the easiest ways to do that is with Bloglovin since it is the best feeder for blogs! I have already installed it on my phone and tablet, this way I can’t miss any posts. Have you tried it? When you open the app there is a number next to any blog you follow to indicate how many posts you haven’t read, and if you want, you can directly visit the feed as seen in the photo above and it will show you all my posts.  It is so easy to use either on your PC or tablet, I promise you will love it! It is like a newspaper but for blogs and without any ads :)

You can find my blog there as well by clicking here or you can use the widget below. If you love my photos and posts I would be so happy if you followed me, so see you over there! :)

Only Deco Love Daylight Photoshop Actions

A while ago I introduced some Photoshop actions on my Etsy shop that include several standalone actions for brightening up a photo. They also remove some of the yellowish tint that often sneaks in especially when there is no option of adjusting white balance in the camera.I get a lot of questions as to how I edit my photos, so today I thought it would be fun to give you a sneak peek of a before and after. Below you can see the difference.
Is the before photo “bad”?I like the tone of the before but personally I need it to be much brighter and this is where my actions come in. They are an automated process of quite a few editing steps that would usually take me more than 15min to replicate but now I only need to press the Play button and I get the same results in mere seconds. Below there are some recent examples I have posted on my Instagram, the difference is quite big depending on how dark the original photo it.

Inside the bundle there are 3 actions for different levels of brightening, one for very dark photos, one for somewhat dark and one for photos that only need a little touch up as well as one for professional sharpening. They all result in my signature look so it is not just about introducing exposure to the photos, but also adjusting their saturation, tone and how sharp the details look after.
You can find the bundle here, they can be loaded in any photoshop version for either Mac or PC.

Quick Brunch , Yogurt and Granola with Chia and Quinoa

Quick brunch today with some Greek yogurt and a new type of granola I found at Menu with Chia and Quinoa. I automatically throw the package and use an airtight container for my granola so I don’t remember the brand , but I am sure if you walk into any Menu you will find it easily over at the Cereal isle. Both Chia and Quinoa are superfoods that I am trying to incorporate more into my everyday meal planning, so adding it quickly in my breakfast of brunch bowl is great. Add some fruits in and you have a delicious snack and a great instagram photo opportunity :)
Last few weeks I have been working quite a lot everyday, so I have been having my lunches on the fly usually with my macbook and notebooks on the side. Sometimes I cannot decide if I should be shooting the perfect environment ( I could certainly remove anything that is not related to breakfast and shoot by the window), however this is where I had my lunch today and I thought giving a glimpse into my everyday life is something I would rather share and not hide. I know a lot of bloggers are on the fence about this but I love seeing candid shots!

Slow Saturday Mornings like these

While patiently waiting for the second batch of marble eggs to be colored (the first batch was unsuccessful) I have found the perfect spot on the bed to work on the blog.
Something funny I noticed last week..my photos are not quite up to my standards when it comes to quality and my camera seems quite wonky, I am afraid it is time to retire it..It has served me well for the last 10 years, even though it saw its most heavy usage last two. If you have suggestions about a new DSLR do leave me a comment, I will appreciate it a lot!

Birthday Pancakes and the best recipe

Yesterday it was my birthday and as per usual every birthday morning calls for a small celebration in bed with dessert and presents. This time it was pancakes and while I wasn’t going to share these photos on the blog, the sheer amount of messages I got regarding the recipe calls for it. In fact I am very happy to share since it is really the best recipe for pancakes I have ever tried. Below you will find ingredients and instructions.
Ingredients :
2 cups flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar
2 eggs
2 cups of milk (if the batter seems too thick add 3 or 4 more tablespoons)
3 tablespoons melted butter, plus butter for cooking
Instructions :
Add all ingredients above in a bowl at the same time, order is inconsequential. Use a whisk (I prefer doing this by hand) and mix until a smooth batter is formed. Cook as per usual. Since this is not a cooking blog I will not attempt to tell anyone how to cook pancakes. I just leave them until bubbles start to form then flip them once and then remove them. No need to leave the batter in the fridge before starting to cook either. Just start right after whisking is done. The pancakes always end up delectable, fluffy and amazing looking. As for today, I just had the leftovers from yesterday (I even left them out of the fridge) with some lemon curd. Delicious!

Cabin Life

Today I had some errands to run and decided to stop at the cabin for a little while. The glamorous life of a blogger requires packing props instead of  clothes and camera equipment no matter how long I end up staying. At least this time I remembered to wear my snow boots, last time I was knee deep in snow in my adidas sneakers while carrying props and goodie bags. Those that follow me on snapchat got quite a laugh and I wont blame them. Never again, props aside, always wear the right shoes for the occasion. Lesson learned!
Have a great weekend!

Golden Hour

Instagram Moments

Some random moments from my Instagram account. I take quite a few photos daily that do not make it into my blog, so I thought I should create a category to sometimes share them with you in bigger format. Some might not be perfect, but there is charm in their imperfection and I love them for that. Tomorrow I am flying to Copenhagen for a Design Letters event, can’t wait to share the news and photos when I come back! It is a one day short trip then back to Norway but since the airport is so much closer to the summer house we will be staying there for a night or two as well. Always great to change it up a little bit right? Feel free to follow me either on Snapchat ( username katerina.dima ) or Instagram for candid real time updates. Got to run if I want to make it on time, lets hope I make all my connecting flights! (Always a stress factor when I am flying!)

A surprise gift from Instagram – The Purfect Calendar

A surprise little gift from Instagram arrived a few weeks ago, I took these photos back then but I forgot this post in my drafts folder. I didn’t expect to like it very much but I have had it on my desk ever since and I found myself eagerly peeling off a page everyday for a different photo. Behind each sheet there are notepad lines so I also use them as temporary lists and such. All in all a very thoughtful gesture that I appreciated a lot and ended up using daily. Instagram got me again :)

Thoughts on Blog VS Instagram

Lately I have seen many bloggers quitting their blogs, time constraints mostly and not being able to keep up with a full time job and the blog upkeeping. It is really hard I am not going to lie, posting on Instagram daily is hard on its own, but making a blogpost is even more time consuming. If you are not getting paid to blog then it is really hard to excuse at least 3 hours daily for a blogpost especially when you have to style, shoot, edit the photos then write the post in question. If I wasn’t in this world I wouldn’t have guessed how much of a time sink blogging is, and it is not only time consuming but quite tiring as well. For example when I shoot upstairs the whole living room has to be turned upside down to accommodate things that wouldn’t necessarily be where they seem in the photo. Then I have to organise everything back to their respective places, hide them back in storage, vacuum and clean after all the mess I created. When I said a blogpost takes 3 hours I did not actually include cleaning time. Of course all photos need to be taken during the day, when there is sufficient natural light, which is another obstacle on its own. I am sad to see some of my favourite bloggers quit, but I completely understand how blogging is mostly a labor of love, there is little money for most bloggers and even less recognition. Unless you are part of a big network, blogging is a thankless job. On instagram you get so much more interaction than when you blog, it is easier to speak to someone too and exchange opinions. However for me, there is nothing better than just browsing through my blog feed and seeing inspirational content from my favourite bloggers in big beautiful photos. Even when someone posts the same photo on instagram and on their blog, I get so much more satisfaction when I see it in the biggest format that I can. All the photos today in this blogpost I also posted on my instagram yesterday and today, but I have to ask, don’t you also enjoy them more in a bigger format? Maybe it is just me, but exactly because I love big photos, I am not going anywhere soon. I cannot speak for the future but for now, this is one of my favourite places to post!

Bathroom Basics

I just got back from my trip to Bergen, and while I was very busy I did make some time for some light shopping (who wouldn’t?). Some new containers for the bathroom plus general accessories and some plants were mostly what I ended up buying, most of them not even in my list however there are some things I just couldn’t leave without purchasing.I found black q-tips (perfect for makeup accidents) , if you don’t feel like hiding them these look great in clear cases. I have also wanted to try a new brand called Meraki, they have various toiletry accessories , I went straight for a hand cream and a pumice stone. I really like the look of their products ( second favourite to Aesop ones), although looks alone will not make me re purchase. I will try everything I bought and let you know what I think, the pumice stone specifically since I rarely find one that I like. I got  a few more things from Bergen but I think best to show those in a different post since they are not bathroom related. I also took some beautiful photos of Bergen that I cannot wait to show you, so keep an eye for the next post.

Blog Renovations

//Styling and Photos by Katerina Dima

I am sure you have noticed the blog has changed its design as of today. I designed the first two versions (the second being the latest one) and I have long been wanting to give it over to a professional. I am using the theme Onno , one of the latest themes from Blog Milk Shop although I just installed it today and while I have spend about 5 hours I am not nearly done yet. I need more tweeks on the theme and I have some ideas but I think the final version is a few more days away. However for now the blog is fully functional although in a very minimal form, but hey! Thats how we love things right? It is funny how many hours something like this can take and I am absolutely exhausted from taking notes, designing, testing and back again. I am sure you are going to love the final result though so keep an eye for the final unveiling!
As for now I need to go to sleep and wake up early tomorrow for some styling and photo sessions, I have so many exciting collaborations to share with you soon!

Winter Wonderland

There is magic in the snow to me, maybe because I grew up in Greece and in Athens I had only seen it snow twice in my whole life. And by snow I mean just a few flakes in the sky that melted as soon as they hit the ground. The shot above is just a photo taken with my iPhone from inside the car while driving to do some shopping. Here we are really hoping for a completely white Christmas, there is nothing I’d love more than to cuddle up in the house with family and loved ones watching movies while outside is snowing. However if snow wont come to us, fortunately where we live it is easy to go to it instead. Next week I m planning for a small trip with the car on the hunt for beautiful white sceneries and finally a Christmas tree (maybe some skiing too?)! I wanted it up from the beginning of December but since I have been travelling it was not possible. So lets see if I can get myself one this weekend! This will be the first year in Norway that I am decorating a tree and I am so excited! I have already bought some ornaments although I will not be filling it up. For now I will trend to the minimalistic side of decorating, especially since I am expecting soon in the mail some amazing porcelain balls that I will love accentuating. I will not spoil the surprise however so you can see for yourselves in the coming days :)

Kubus4 Black byLassen

One of my all time favorites when it comes to candleholders is the Kubus4 in black from ByLassen. Its classic profile fits my minimalistic interior perfectly while the light it emits is soft yet bright, it fills the house during winter afternoons and nights. I bought mine when I was at CPH airport at the duty free section, and it was the very first byLassen piece I have ever owned. Now with the release of the brass line for candleholders and bowls I am wondering if the fact that I am going to be at CPH airport in a few days again is such a coincidence? :)

My Etsy Shop and my first set of Actions!

I get asked all the time how I edit my photos to have the characteristic bright look that everyone has come to recognize, so I decided to share some of the actions I created in Photoshop in a little bundle at my new Etsy Shop! When I shoot multiple photos these actions have become a lifesaver when it comes to time management as I can process photos in butches and ensure that they will all have the same effects, tone, color and brightness!
If you like editing your photos on Photoshop like me, you are going to love the set of two actions I just listed! In the bundle the first action called Daylight was used for the first photo as seen above (hover on the photos for the before!) and the second action called Soft Daylight was used for the second photo. I use the first action when the originals are quite dark and the second when the originals are not as dark but still need editing. The actions will correct the brightness using layers so there are no burnt pixels, and while they will give the final photo a bright daylight look, they will also adjust behind the scenes the tint and color so the photos end up having the look above. I hope you like these set of actions , I will keep adding more in the future depending on how successful the first set was :)
Please do have a look at my Etsy Shop and thank you so much for your support!
