LIFE / GETTING READY FOR

Layed out are all the essentials to cover the shows from Vodafone’s Firsts Fashion LAB. Just like last season, when I had the pleasure to interview the super talented Fernanda Fernandes.  Vodafone Firsts Fashion LAB is where new designers make their first debut at Fashion Week Amsterdam, a once in a life time shot for a young designer. I was very curious to see all the shows of these newcomers, with one in particular… Liselore Frowijn. For the very first time in her career she showed her first fashion show last week during MBFWA. And not just any show, she had the honor to kick off Vodafone’s Firsts Fashion LAB. A dream come true. Her collection ‘No. 3 Formania’ made a big entrance in front of the Dutch fashion press. And it also got live streamed worldwide thanks to Vodafone. I can’t even imagine how that have must felt for Lisalore! To learn more about Liselore and to see her journey watch this inspiring docu:

…and I decided to take a year off to travel. confessions of an ex-fashion girl.

Accepting impermanence is a life long pursuit.

For the longest time, I’ve been yearning to write to you, and yet words kept chocking on my throat, and there’s this fear that’s been confronting me whether these thoughts make any sense. Since my last post, I’ve been on this journey within evaluating everything in my life. Who is Melis, what drives her?

In order to explain this story, I need to go back to the beginning of how everything started…

catch me up

It was our first time in the Maldives a little over a year ago. As an immigrant in the United States, it felt as if my whole life has been in survival mode, and the pursuit of trying to make it in America. However I never stopped to think and understand my lifestyle. Some of us are chained to think, you get a job, you get salary, and the better you do, the more things you can buy. I fell into this category.

When you live in a city like NYC, you can’t help but want things to fill your space. I just felt like I needed things, so many things, but was it truly fulfilling my soul and creating happiness?

This lifestyle made sense to me at the time, because I haven’t had a chance to understand the reasons behind the thought process. The more I worked, the more I wanted to spend and fill my space with stuff. But when we were in Maldives – I’m not sure whether it was the human to island space ratio, or the vastness of turquoise waters, my mind kept expanding. “WHERE DO I GO FROM HERE?!” I asked Abel. It felt like I peaked, and I didn’t know what else there was left for me. Because I was in such a good place, I also created some of my self-proclaimed best work.

the mondays

The crash right after was heavy in a first world kind of way. I went through my LONGEST creative block, and nothing felt new or different anymore. I stopped posting regularly, a lot of you reached out to ask if I was okay. To be honest, I felt a lot of guilt leaving you in the dark. New York was making me feel claustrophobic, I started the conversation of perhaps moving out of the city – something that your better half does not want to hear given we just did the coast to coast moving. However, I always knew deep down that, one day Abel and I would take some time off, and travel the world. I had this strong urge to see and reconnect with our planet and I hoped that I could find some answers. So for everyone who’s been asking why we’ve been traveling so much, I hope this sheds a bit of light.

It’s only natural for all living beings to change over time. What I was going through was merely an evolution of my being and creative soul. It wanted, scratch that NEEDED more than what I was currently doing. I still think dressing is a form of art, but my art and interests grew beyond fashion covering more travel, photography, and spirituality – some of the other things that bring my soul joy.

onwards

What I really realized through this journey is that my main goal is not to convince you to buy something or live your life a certain way, I think there are many people who are doing an amazing job out there. I still hope to share my unbiased honest opinions about everything and will try my best to answer your questions about anything.  Creating in any form including photography helps me heal as a human being, and what I hope is to show life through our eyes and perhaps help you get through something too. No matter the circumstances, there’s always love and light, you just have to see it.

What I also realized, it took a freaking LONG TIME I know – but there’s more to life than Instagram, and to be honest, the influencer path isn’t for me. This completely changed my mindset about photography and creativity. Posting the things that truly inspire me and make me happy vs. posting them for likes/comments and the algorithm. I think what I love the most is capture a moment that is forever dear to me. In order to do so, good vibes and virtually stimulating place is key, my outfit still matters too, of course. Bonus points for the less people there are, the better. Here’s a little secret: my personal happiness has gone up significantly ever since I stopped caring about social media. So I hope you don’t make the same mistake as I did — please don’t measure your life’s worth to social media.

thank you

Despite my lack of commitment to the Instagram game, I’m very thankful for everyone who has reached out, given me feedback, taken the time to just connect on this platform. You are beautiful souls, and I feel your good energy. I couldn’t have gone through this journey without your help. And things are about to get a whole lot more interesting, and I hope to keep you in the loop in a more fun way.

If you read it this far, wow you’re amazing. I know it’s rare for people to read blogs these days, let alone read long formats. I hope some of my raw discoveries can help you too.

with love,
Melis

Myanmar travel journal: a story of not every trip is sunshine and rainbows

Array ( [post_title] => Myanmar travel journal: a story of not every trip is sunshine and rainbows [post_content] =>

It all started with starting to question myself. It was around Christmas time, and we’ve committed to attending a wedding of a couple that I’ve never met. The groom is a childhood friend of Abel’s and we thought what better opportunity to reconnect with an old friend, and when else would we ever go to Myanmar!?

As an aspiring Buddhist, going to Bagan seemed like the perfect opportunity. Plus it’s known for the magical pagodas and sunsets, and we even committed to a hot air balloon ride!
48 hours later, and a missed flight which ended up in an overnight stay in Dubai, we weren’t in Kansas anymore. We also quickly realized the weather wasn’t cooperating with us. Bagan known for its dry season at the time, was showing rain for the next 4 days which is coincidentally how long we were staying there for. We were told that once it starts raining, it lasts for days, and does not stop. Boy were they right…
Then and there, I started questioning the meaning of everything. Here we are in Bagan half way across the world with non stop raining just like NYC, got to take one of the few vacations I can with my workaholic husband during holiday season. What’s the point of even trying I thought to myself? Plus, most of the wedding group already knew each other, so we started to feel like outsiders.
It all started to change once we got to the reception. We made two new friends who live in Asia and had the best time hanging out with them. The hot air balloon ride got cancelled, but we got to see a completely new face of Bagan during rain, which meant less dust and tourists and shot one of my favorite photos to date visiting the pagodas. Abel also got to reconnect with a friend from the past.
I’m not sure when we will ever go back to Bagan, and I’m thankful that we had this crazy excuse to witness a completely different part of the world and even got a sneak peek of Dubai too! My favorite trips are the ones that change me even if it’s a little bit, and it was one to remember.
PS. Shortly after our visit to Bagan, we also decided to donate to a charity who helps Muslim refugees of Myanmar who are being oppressed by the Buddhist community. You can check them out here.

It all started with starting to question myself. It was around Christmas time, and we’ve committed to attending a wedding of a couple that I’ve never met. The groom is a childhood friend of Abel’s and we thought what better opportunity to reconnect with an old friend, and when else would we ever go to […]

In the middle of winter and snow, I’m dreaming of California more than ever.

Los Angeles, a dystopian city gone right. The beaches surrounded by traffic, and blessed In-N-Outs. Even their cultural memes (a gauntlet from BoJack to Californication) are qualities you can vibe to.

I think we’d like to retire there some time. Just, paying our beach tax of losing track of time, playing loose in a California lifestyle, hey I may even pick up surfing too. You can even retrace the steps of Hunter S. Thompson’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (current read) if your heart so desires. Vegas is only a few hours away.

As I follow the SoCal fires (and the NorCal ones as well), it makes one wonder if we will eventually have to surrender California back to nature. But in the meantime, we’re soaking up as much time as we can.

PS. You can donate for California fires here, a very nice Christmas gift idea.

Until next time, LA! x

“I don’t think the amount of bullshit you have to deal with in a startup is more than you’d endure in an ordinary working life. It’s probably less, in fact; it just seems like a lot because it’s compressed into a short period. So mainly what a startup buys you is time. That’s the way to think about it if you’re trying to decide whether to start one. If you’re the sort of person who would like to solve the money problem once and for all instead of working for a salary for 40 years, then a startup makes sense.” – Paul Graham, How to Start a Startup

“Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.” — T.S. Elliot

That first quote is from my favorite PG essay in regards to how to solve the “money problem” that shadows human existence. Trading work intensity for fortune & more time seems fair if things work out. But we kept working after the Caviar acquisition. The hunger never left. The restless need to grasp new life content itched deeper.

Fashion Mews as our second startup chapter has been such an interesting journey of what we’ve nicknamed, “creative entrepreneuring.” It brought me closer to Melis, understanding how to support & love her not just as a wife, but as co-founders. We’ve grown together.

Despite the political times in the world (2017 wasn’t our best, gang), the economic hardship, the injustice, and unexplainable mass shootings, there’s almost never a bad time to go on a personal bull run. We believe optimism is addicting. The bleeding edge is being clumsily foraged together by frontier folk who live in the ever-shifting unknown.

That’s why we’re entrepreneurs, to make our talents count for, whatever it’s worth being alive.

Array ( [post_title] => mewly check in #17: so inspired.. all thanks to you [post_content] =>

Lately I’ve been pulling out 12 hour work days, but you know what, all I want to do is just keep going. I’ve also been kind of quieter on the blog, as I’ve been working on something special on the side for almost a year now. Yeah, I know my job requires me to be open and sharing all the time. But trust me I’ll share with all of you when I’m ready. It’s just that I’m so Turkish in some ways, and the fear of pride and embarrassment is stopping me from revealing it sooner. You know what they say (or I hope they do!), do before tell.

the agenda

Oh boy where do I begin? We’ve been working on some really exciting projects that I cannot wait to show you. Plus we’re slowly planning more travel for later this year and next. Where should we go next? Share away! I’m also in the midst of updating our fall wardrobe, so stay tuned for that. Who else is excited for layering, but not so excited for colder weather? Who else wants to move to California during January-February and potentially March if it ends up snowing more? ANYONE??

what we are watching

Project Runway is back in action – if I haven’t told you before, yes I’m a religious viewer. British Bakeoff is back as well, thought 75% of the cast has changed, and I’m still on the fence about that. We literally watch it because we like the contestants. Oh hubby also just told me he really wants to watch Insecure. Have any of you seen it?

the outfit

Summer is here to stay, but fall is slowly creeping in. What can I say, I’m excited for the up and coming layers, and change of colors, but not so excited for those snowy days. In the meantime, I’ll still go wild with my crop tops.

Thank you for reading! x

Array ( [post_title] => top sneaker trends for 2017 [post_content] =>

I love writing special posts that you guys request from me. One of my dear followers have been asking me to write up a sneakers post. As promised here we are!

To give you a background I’ve been a sneakers addict as long as I can remember. Humble brag, I was the first person to dump my fancy prep school shoes for a pair of blue Nike Cortez, and never looked back. Of course, it only made sense to build a closet full of sneakers now, they definitely take up majority in my shoe collection. It’s safe to say for every 5 sneakers I have, I own one pair of heels, too.

Without further ado, here are my most favorite sneakers, with a side of my thoughts on comfortability (and price). Because when it comes to sneakers, comfort is key.

So here we go… TOP 5 MEWY SNEAKERS. GO!

5. Superga Platforms (comfort 6/10): When it comes to cute and stylish, they definitely are a winner. Supergas elevate any outfit, and I get so many compliments whenever I wear them.  However, I can’t say the same about comfort, and don’t believe they’re made for walking. If you like to wear low ankle socks like me, you may end up with ankle blisters. Or I’m prone to blisters in general if I don’t protect my ankles, so be warned.

4. Golden Goose Deluxe (comfort 7/10): These are the IT shoes of the season with every color possible out there. I’m not gonna lie, I fell in love with them the moment I saw them. They’re so cute and make any outfit significantly chicer with its vintage worn-out vibe. However, with limited sole padding and limited ankle coverage, they’re not my everyday go-to shoes. Still worth? Worth if you get over the sticker shock. Shop different styles here.

3. Adidas Originals (comfort 8/10): These were the IT shoes about 2-3 years ago, however I’m afraid to admit that they sort of peaked at this point. Depending on the type you get, the comfort level could be a hit or miss. I own three pairs, and I swear the padding is different on all of them. Still, they’re one of my go-to shoes when I’m on the run. I linked my most comfy version here.

2. Celine (comfort 9/10): If there’s a holy grail of sneakers, it must be the Celines. They’re so subtle, aka no crazy look at my logo kind of way, yet it’s safe to say they’re sophisticated statement sneakers. People ask about them all the time, and I feel guilty telling where they’re from. If it wasn’t for the crazy price tag, it’d be my #1 on this list, and I understand not everyone justifies spending that much on a pair of sneaks. Hubby for sure judged me big time when I pulled the trigger.

1. Nike (comfort 10/10): I think this is as good as it gets. Stylish? Check. Comfort? Check. Reasonably priced? Check check. They’re a classic to go with any outfit, and if you want to stay ahead of the trends, or looking for a pair that’s not overdone, go for this one! Plus, the founder story of Nike Shoe Dog  is just amazing.

Since we last spoke, we’ve been across to country for some amazing projects in Las Vegas and San Francisco, and many many photos have been waiting for me edit. Is it possible for them to edit themselves? There’s a joke in here somewhere.

the agenda

Can you believe it’s almost fashion week season? I’m still in denial that summer is almost over, and NYC winter is around to corner to taunt my Mediterranean skin. I may not be ready for colder weather, but I sure am so excited to start layering again. Tank tops and shorts are cool and all, but there’s so much more creativity in putting together more complex looks.

Those of you have been following our investing journey, we got some new updates. We flew out to SF to meet some new potential companies, and we’re in the midst of finalizing our potential investments for Ramen Ventures this season. There were so many amazing companies within Y-Combinator batch this season, and we left so inspired and motivated.

what we are watching

Summer time has been so kind to us with so many amazing shows… HINT: WINTER FINALLY CAME. We also have been loving the new season of Suits and recently started watching Ozark. You had me at when they started playing one of my favorite Radiohead songs.

Oh also, listening to Bodak Yellow on repeat.

the outfit

I had the most fun photo walking around Berlin with Svante, who is a local Berlin photographer. It felt to bring out my androgynous yet playful feminine side, just like the beautiful Berlin. Every time I visit this city, I feel like a part of me changes for the better.

I promise to keep you guys updated more frequently. Until next time! x

Until next time! x

Where can I start with Berlin? The edgy streets, the unique sense of style, the unlimited amount of choice of coffee shops.. It’s the perfect package for the Fashion Mews team. The attitude of this city is just contagious.

We had a lot more time to explore this amazing city. and my favorite places, the coffee shops.

19grams
Tips: The poached eggs, White-Top is their only drink that comes default with a two-shot espresso. Check upstairs for some comfy couches.

If you judged us by where we stayed the most out of all the coffee shops on this list, it’d be 19grams. They are lightly staffed, so the service is at a slower pace. You can only get their food items (outside of baked goods) if you’re staying in. But with a gracious laptop policy with Wi-Fi (a lot of cafes frown upon this) and great music (they played the entire Drake More Life album once), it’s Abel’s go-to spot.

Oslo Kaffebar
Tips: Great Wi-Fi, they’ve got oat milk if lactose ain’t your game. They even do ice cubes, you filthy Americans.

It’s got a grunge, Norwegian vibe going on here, which became Melis’ favorite while we were in Berlin. It’s got plenty of space inside, and the menu, while a bit tinier than other coffee shops we’ve been to, were all on point.

Cafe Bondi
Tips: Come here hungry, because the plates are huge. Cash only.

On the Instagram factor, this probably has some of the best lighting/coffee/flat lay corners on this list. Also strangely, it is the only Australian coffee outfit we met on this trip. They also seem to have a massive thing for The Animal Kingdom (good film, couldn’t get behind the TV series though).

The Barn
Tips: There are a few locations, scout carefully before committing!

Melis actually randomly stumbled upon this during her photo walk, and the Barn team takes pride in sourcing origin beans (they’re participating in the Berlin Coffee Festival this year too!). They offer pouring/sensory training classes on how to taste coffee, too. Yes, they care a lot about coffee beans.

Distrikt Coffee
Tips: This place is hopping, but they have outdoor spacing up front and in the back!

Probably one of the busiest places we went to (besides the next one), but thankfully they have a lot of space on the sides, and the staff was incredibly hospitable. They even offered us an extra plate when they accidentally made an extra item for another table that left! It seemed like everyone here was ordering pancakes too…damn our pescatarian diet.

House of Small Wonder
Tips: Matcha Latte is a beauty, you should get there before 10am for breakfast/brunch and last call is half an hour before they close which is 4:30pm!

What a delightful addition to the Berlin coffee scene. Infused with the restaurant downstairs Zankichi, you’ll see the influence it has on their menu items & staff. The entrance is where Instagrams pop off, and the service is very cordial and prompt, probably the best out of this entire list.

Their motto is that everyday life is not about the “big wonders, it’s about the small wonders that make things just a little more pleasant.” After visiting HOSW, we tend to agree.

Were they any other coffee shops you think we should’ve checked out? We’d love to hear your suggestions in the comments. We do this for the fans.

mewly check in #15: finding authenticity

Array ( [post_title] => mewly check in #15: finding authenticity [post_content] =>

We’re back to NYC, but I still have many many photos to post from Berlin, stay tuned! I feel like, every time we travel, my mind gets blown away over and over again. I need to dedicate a separate post on my thoughts on Berlin. In the meantime, we’re way over due for a mewly check in.

the agenda

I guess my agenda this week, and every week really is finding my unique voice and style. Authenticity is so rare to find in saturated market like blogging scene, where lots of people are trying to make something out of nothing.

So note to self: don’t get lost in someone else’s path.

Trust that it will pay off dividends at the end.

Oh and we’re headed to Vegas for a fun project, so stay tuned for lots of updates soon!

what we are watching

Game of Thrones, for obvious reasons – winter finally came, and no more spoilers on our end. And we finally started watching the new Twin Peaks series, and it’s more abstract than ever. It’s like LOST and X-Files had a baby. Worth it.

the outfit

Where can I begin with this outfit? I feel like this is as “Melis” as it gets. Mini skirts to survive summer? Check. White oversized shirt turned into a duster coat? Check. White sneakers? Check check check. I call this one athleisure meets luxe meets edgy meets Kreuzberg.

Until next time! x
