Dezeen Awards: architecture longlist announced

A theatre for flying monks, a pink and green striped house and tower complex built around a “plant-covered mountain” are among 218 architecture projects that made the longlist for the first Dezeen Awards.

We attracted over 3,500 submissions from 91 different countries for the inaugural edition of our new awards programme, which celebrates the world’s best new architecture, interiors and design.

Shaolin Flying Monks Theatre, Dengfeng City, China, by Mailitis Architects

The longlist for the architecture categories features some of the most respected names in the industry, including OMA, Foster + Partners, Herzog & de Meuron, MAD and David Chipperfield Architects.

It also features a range of studios that are prolific in their home country, including John Wardle Architects, Jamie Fobert Architects, Studio MK27, Barkow Leibinger, Vo Trong Nghia Architects, Henning Larsen Architects and O’Donnell + Tuomey.

Other highlights from the longlist include a vineyard hotel in Uruguay, a hikers’ shelter on stilts in the UK, a bamboo cricket pavilion in Rwanda.

The list will now be judged by a panel of leading architects and industry figures, including Tatiana Bilbao, John Pawson, Ma Yansong, Asif Khan and Dorte Mandrup, ahead of a shortlist announcement in August.

The winner of each category will then go on to compete for the architecture project of the year title – one of nine Ultimate Dezeen Awards.

The longlists for the interiors and design categories will be announced very soon. Keep your eyes peeled on Dezeen to see them!
