L’AmourLe Smoking

“For a woman, Le Smoking is an indispensable garment with which she finds herself continually in fashion, because it is about style, not fashion. Fashions come and go, but style is forever.” Yves Saint Laurent

I love how weird my brain is and how a conversation about Hedi Slimane’s photography on Monday night and then yesterday looking through the MatchesFashion website (selecting my wishlist) have lead me to think about how incredible the Le Smoking tuxedo is. Don’t get me wrong this is not a revelation, I’ve always appreciated it but for some reason this is the first time in two years that I’ve thought to write about it.

Yves Saint Laurent did something incredible for women in 1966 when he redesigned the tuxedo for women, creating the Le Smoking. He gave us a chance to dress androgynously and still look sexy. It was a power suit of the highest order at a time when women were famously liberating themselves from convention, the 60s.

Move forward to modern times and Hedi Slimane brings us a contemporary version of the Le Smoking with tapered legs and a tailored jacket that give the ultimate slim silhouette. This is one suit I will be dreaming about for years to come, a wardrobe staple and the best alternative to a cocktail dress. If you’re not sure what to wear to your Christmas party, why not wear a tux and some killer heals, et voila, sexy and cool.
