TRAVEL / Visiting L.A. with Kids

For those who follow me on Instagram, you saw the family and I spent all of last week in LA. I just now realized I never made a formal mention of this on the blog, only weeks earlier mentioning it in passing. I had fully intended to do a post before we…

Favorite personal care products

Yesterday I booked our airbnb house for June, we’re going to LA with the kids that week. It’s been a while since we’ve had a proper vacation so I’m looking forward to this very much. With the trip planned along with the weather changing I’ve been thinking more and more about getting myself ready. Starting a new workout routine (so hard to stick to for me) and of course being conscious of my diet for starters but also I’m realizing my skin and hair have taken a harsh beating from the dry winter and not exactly beach ready, yet. This week I booked a hair appointment and next week the dentist, something I’ve put off for months because I hate seeing the dentist. HATE it. Being an adult is so…overrated.
So I thought I’d share with you a few of my personal tried-and-true favorites, things I’ve bought again and again because the work so well for me.

Aesop B & Tea toner – this has been one of my favorite go to’s for everyday but especially when I feel a zit coming on.

Iris Hantverk face brush – nice for exfoliating with a gentleman cream cleaners, like this one for example.

Ouai hair masque – my hair is naturally curly so it dries out and breaks faster and easier than most hair. I use these twice a month which has given me noticeable improvement in the texture. Along with several other leave in products, this makes me hair feel softer and healthier.

Ritual essential for women – this offers longer term benefits but taking a multivitamin is crucial for me because I know there are some days my diet isn’t perfectly balanced. This one is specifically for women and I do love the minimal packaging (a plus)!

Glossier stretch concealer – On a normal day I wear very little makeup. I’m not having my picture taken nor do I see a lot of people who I need to impress. ;) I do however have some small scars and redness but I’m not going to spend 30 minutes carefully layering a lot of makeup for a perfect finish. This is ideal for me to dab on with my finger, it gives a natural coverage and blends easily. No doubt the best concealer I’ve tried yet. It’s a keeper.

Mario Badescu drying lotion – a good friend suggested this to me, besides the toner it’s the other product I use if I feel a pimple coming. I had moved this apparently too aggressively for the photos because I somehow mixed the ingredients but you’re not supposed to. Keep the pink sediment at the bottom and dip a q tip all the way through. This can be applied as a spot treatment and really does the job. Sometimes I can keep a pimple at bay with only this stuff.

French Girl lip polish – one of my newest purchases, I wanted something to scrub my lips with because I noticed they get cry a lot. I know I need to drink more water but when I’m in a pinch this helps.

If you have any favorite person products you want to share, feel free to leave it in the comments section below. Nothing is better than personal recommendation to me so please do tell!

In Paris, Aesop’s offices are turned into temporary spas

Son of French designer Pierre Paulin, Benjamin Paulin has collaborated with Aesop to create temporary spaces for facials and other treatments for their Rue Saint-Honoré offices.

A long time admirer of Pierre’s work, Aesop’s architect Jean-Philippe Bennefoi struck up a relationship with Paulin, Paulin, Paulin to create a three room service space that allows the customer to have the rooms completely to themselves for 90 minutes. Each room serves a unique function as entrance room, another for discussing custom treatments and yet another for the customer to experience the treatment itself.

Using some of Paulin’s work including the Anda chair, Mushroom stool, Tanis desk, the pedestal table designed for Ligne Roset, and the Osaka sofa designed for La Cividina were mixed with vintage piece. Each furniture piece was chosen primarily for it’s functionality without creating a showroom for Paulin.

A Month of Minimalism / Skincare by Madelynn Furlong

I’ve followed Madelynn for quite a while, years even, and while her style has evolved (whose hasn’t?) one constant has been her inclination toward minimalism. Today she talks about what minimalism means to her and shares her simple skincare routine, the sugar polish has been on my list to try as well!

What does minimalism mean to you?
To me, it a stands for a way of self discovery and means a practice of being considerate about what you let into your life and why. What you let in, often will tell you a lot about yourself. I also think that it is not a sparsity of things (which I think is commonly believed), but it is an intentionality behind everything. Everything serves a purpose.

Does sustainability play a role in minimalism for you?
To some degree, yes. But I will be honest and say that at this point in my life, I prioritize personal aesthetic over sustainability.

What goals do you have for yourself in the new year to make sure you continue to adhere to your minimalist values?
My main love is fashion. I have always been fascinated by how we present ourselves to others and the world, and have spent years discovering my personal style – and have documented the process in a curated closet series. However this year I am paying special attention to my skincare routine. Focusing less on fixing my complexion with makeup, and more on taking care of it through diet, regular facials and a skincare routine. Currently my favorite products are from Aesop, Fresh, Weleda, Dr. Jart and Fig + Yarrow (among a few others). I stick mostly to natural products or lines created for sensitive skin. And since making this switch to a more consistent and concise routine, I have seen a huge difference in my skin- for the better!

Do you find it difficult to stay minimal when it comes to beauty products?
Honestly, no. Dont get me wrong- I love wearing a good beauty look from time to time. But daily I use three to five products: A little Dr Jart cc cream or Chanel foundation, Marc Jacobs highlighter on my cheeks, Glossier boy brow, Dior rose lip cream and every once and a while I will put on mascara and a little bronzer. I keep a few lipsticks colors and fun eyeliners on hand for when I want to do something a bit more out there, but I love a natural look and have always enjoyed keeping things super simple!

I love Boy Brow too! With so many great and tempting products out there and new ones coming out daily, how do you keep your arsenal minimal?
This can be super challenging, as I often get samples to try out and partner with different beauty lines through my blog. I am always open to trying new things! But after a few uses, if I dont feel like its the right fit for my skin, I give it away. No use keeping things around that I wont use! I also try my best to get frequent facials. I have found that a great facialist really does help keep your skin in great shape. Once you get it there, maintaining it is easy. Another great reason to get frequent facials- you dont have to own product, and instead can pay for the service.

If someone wanted to streamline their own beauty cabinet, where would you suggest they begin?
I would say start with the basics. Cleanser, toner, a serum and a cream. Start seeing a facialist regularly and see what they recommend for you! See how your skin reacts to a more minimal routine and add from there based on your needs. Also analyze your daily routine- what do you always wear and what do you make time for? If you are holding onto products and gadgets that you never use- let them go! I recently realized I had 8 different red lipsticks, and seeing that I hardly ever wear lipstick, I made the choice to bring that number down to my three favorites. I think once you step back and analyze, it can become easier to see what to hold on to and what to let go of.

6 favorite modern cabins

Most of the residences I feature here on AMM show the interiors exclusively because the challenge of organizing a space to live in is incredibly intriguing, with a real life application for all of us. Living with other people or keeping all of our possessions in order while also saying something to the world about the home’s inhabitants and their lifestyle is all endlessly interesting. Interiors are often in a constant state of evolution as our needs and tastes change with time, with experience.
Exteriors and architecture are also very interesting as they can be interpreted a multiplicity of ways with dozens of materials, each of which can be treated with a different technique. Earlier this year we were in Portland and visited one of the Aesop stores whose interior is made completely of wood treated with a Japanese charring technique called Shou Sugi Ban. This can often be used as an exterior treatment as well however I also slightly prefer the look of weathered wood a bit more and even concrete or plaster as well.
I’ve been telling my husband for years that I want to build a little cabin somewhere for us. I’d be entirely happy with a modest place and sparse furniture, just so long as we can design the building ourselves. I’d want a lot of lumber, wood paneled floors and ceilings with built in storage. Furniture that serves dual purposes or at least collapse into a wall and a slim profile would be my ideal way of making the most of even a micro cabin. Some place near water and lots of tall trees, where we can all disconnect from routines and reconnect with nature. A big deck like the Nido cabin above from Robin Falck, would also be crucial because with a cabin it’s all about blurring the lines between the indoors and outdoors.
Here I’ve collected 6 cabins or in some cases homes, with simple exterior styles of pitched, shed and flat roofs.

Partners Hill hides Aesop pop-up among the undergrowth at Tasmanian music festival

Revellers at a Tasmanian music festival were invited to cool off inside this wooden pavilion filled with Aesop products, designed by architecture studio Partners Hill  (+ movie). Aesop was one of the sponsors of the MONA FOMA festival that took place earlier this year at Tasmania’s MONA art gallery. So the skincare brand commissioned local studio Partners Hill to create a pop-up space to showcase its products. The studio, led More

Aesop Frederiksberg

With no two stores alike, the unveiling of a new Aesop store is always a sight. The Værnedamsvej in Frederiksberg, Copenhagen location was designed was Ilse Crawford of Studio Ilse. She drew inspiration from famous Danish painter Vilhelm Hammershøi along with the elegant simplicity of Nordic design to incorporate greens, greys, brass and timber. The original concrete floors were given a lime wash and Made By Hand was commissioned to make a custom brass pendant light (see it here) for the back room. In addition I’m sure it all smells heavens and hopefully I’ll get to visit this IRL very soon!
