Jackets are the perfect finishing touch to any outfit. They can add interest, excitement, depth, or even cover up a wardrobe malfunction with style. Finding the right jacket for each outfit and occasion is the key to completing the look, so it’s important to consider what kind of circumstances you’ll be in when wearing the jacket.

Here are five of the most classic jackets that anyone should have in their wardrobes in order to look great for any and every occasion.

Leather jacket

Every wardrobe should have a leather (or faux leather) jacket, as it’s a classic staple piece that is great for a variety of occasions. Whether it’s a bomber, biker, racer, flight, or field jacket, your leather coat is a quality addition to any outfit. You can wear it to dress up an outfit with the right accessories, or pair it with more trendy clothes to give off a more laid-back vibe.

Leather jackets are also ideal for a few different temperatures, so don’t put your jacket away just because the season is ending. Crisp spring mornings and evenings, cooler autumn temperatures, and brisk wintery days are all perfect for leather jackets, since leather is an insulating textile and does well at keeping you warm.

Puffer jacket

Down-filled coats are usually a fashion nightmare, but this year they’re so on-trend, thanks to high fashion runway brands and the puffy sleeve resurgence. This is great news for anyone who usually plans on spending the majority of the winter indoors to avoid the cold weather, because now you can be toasty warm and trendy. Brands like JACK1T have taken the runway influences down to streetwear level, adding some extra style to the usual puffer coat look.

Colourful blazer

Blazers are a wardrobe staple which can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. While they don’t offer much for warmth in terms of outerwear, they’re great for styling and adding a pop of colour to your outfit. Neutrals like grey, beige and black are usually go-to colours during the cooler months, so why not add some excitement and give your wardrobe some colour to brighten it up? The neutrals you own already will match perfectly with a red, blue, green, or yellow blazer.

Denim jacket

Cooler evenings are basically begging for denim jackets. They’re a classic style of jacket that matches almost every outfit choice (it’s even trendy to wear denim on denim lately) and helps you look young and chic at the same time. If you’re more concerned about the style than the warmth, a denim jacket is a great way to accessorise an otherwise plain outfit. However, if you’re looking to layer up to keep you toasty, there are denim jackets out there that are lined with wool, so you can continue to rock the look well after the temperature drops.

Raincoats aren’t all super sporty and make you look like you’re on your way back from a three-day hike in the woods – they can be versatile and fashionable just like any other jacket. Plus, everyone needs a trendy jacket for when the weather isn’t co-operating. For wet winters, a trendy raincoat is a must, because you want to stay dry, and it’s probably going to be the only piece of clothing people will see when you’re outside, so don’t let it be an afterthought. Thick raincoats are great for colder weather, but if you want one that can be worn in multiple seasons, opt for a thinner fabric so you can add warmer layers underneath if necessary.
