An Interview With Frances & Lisa From Uncivilised
Uncivilised launch today with a womenswear collection aimed at those of us that lead busy lives, their plan is to simplify your wardrobe so that when you’re in a hurry it’s easy to combine any of their pieces and run out the door still feeling well put together; a great capsule wardrobe. The girls really understand their concept as they’re living the lives they design for and with their exceptional understanding of fabrics and cut, they’re creating slow fashion pieces that you will return to again and again. Their AW15 collection has a grown-up grunge style, with plaid and stripes, ripped jeans and slouchy cardigans, silky slips and (my favourite piece) perfectly fitting boyfriend jeans.
Tell me about the concept behind your brand…
Uncivilised is all about effortless off-duty dressing. We want to create a capsule wardrobe of classic coordinating pieces for women today to fit into their busy lives. You should be able to throw on the pieces and effortlessly look and feel great. We have an emphasis on classic style rather than following trends, and believe in a buy less, buy well ethos. We design pieces that will transcend seasonal dressing and will be the basis of our customer’s core wardrobes.
What was you starting point? What did you design first?
We started with the basics – we looked to the past for the most iconic wardrobe staples, the perfect tee, the boyfriend sweater, the high-waisted skinny jeans, the body, and the jumpsuit. We love the idea of one piece wonders like the jumpsuit which can be thrown on for an instantly chic outfit.
How has your experience in the industry affected your approach to Uncivilised?
We know we can deliver great product from our experience and relationship with the factory we have worked with for 7 years so with Uncivilised we want to concentrate on building a strong brand with the core focus on the needs of our customers.
We knew that we wanted to create elevated basics to build a timeless core wardrobe as we are acutely aware of the effect of fast fashion on our environment and we strive to create meaningful pieces which will stand the test of time.
Describe your perfect customer…
The Uncivilised girl is hard-working, creative and funny with a wonderfully chaotic lifestyle – girls like us and our friends who need their clothes to look and feel great with minimal effort.
Describe a typical day in the life of Uncivilised…
We start the day in our office just off Hoxton Square with a catch up over a strong coffee. At the moment, we are organising our launch event so this week we will be sending out invitations. We are also finalising our website ready for the launch of our AW15 collection in July. For our SS16 collection we are liaising with photographers for our look book shoot. We are also receiving new samples all the time which we review and fit ready for July selling appointments and the trade show Pure where we will be showing the collection. Alongside all this we try to stay in constant contact with our Uncivilised tribe of followers on social media, bloggers and friends who are interested in the brand. The evenings usually consist of a massive glass of red wine and good food!
What five items in your wardrobe could you not live without?
We are big believers in developing your own style uniform which you always go back to and feel amazing in. Our must haves are a perfect white tee, your favourite skinny jeans, a throw on slouchy cardigan, classic kicks, and a piece of jewellery you wear every day, ours is an everyday simple necklace.
Which material do you most enjoy working with, and why?
We are a bit geeky when it comes to fabrics and can’t go anywhere without touching all the fabrics, and turning garments inside out to see the finishes. Jersey is our favourite, it’s such a versatile fabric, we have luxe mulinated yarn jersey tees with the perfect drape, coated loopbacks, and reverse diagonal loopbacks in the collection which is such a great fabric. We’ve made our Lunar blanket coat fully reversible as the reverse is too good not to show! We are obsessed with 100% cotton rigid denim for the authentic vintage look too.
We have a background in jersey and denim and our factory specialise in these fabrics. We want to work with the strengths of our factory so it is a partnership. We work together to source really unusual and interesting fabrics that you won’t find on the high street to elevate our minimal style and our relationship we have built with them is really important to this.
Which photographer would you most like to shoot your next collection?
This is a great question! In a dream world where budget is no issue we would shoot the next collection with Juergen Teller, his iconic shots of Kate Moss in the 90s are so perfect!
What is the one piece you think every woman should have in her wardrobe?
It’s got to be one of our ‘one-piece wonders’ such as our Pagan playsuit where one piece is your whole polished outfit, minimal effortless dressing at its best!
What are your favourite shops in London?
We love Aida Shoreditch, Goodhood, and Urban Outfitters, also Bad Denim in Clapton is an amazing specialist denim store – go and check it out, it has the most amazing selection of vintage denim as well.
What are you currently listening to in the studio?
We have quite an eclectic mix of tastes so our playlist could go from Taylor Swift into Black Sabbath into Fleetwood Mac into FKA Twigs.
What will you do to celebrate the completion of your first collection?
In an ideal world we would head off to a spiritual retreat, somewhere exotic for some meditation and crystal healing therapy – however that is fairly unlikely as we will be straight onto the next season. We will certainly be cracking open the bubbly at our launch event!
