For a long time velvet was not cool, usually reserved for those of a more mature age with very traditional homes. A couple of years ago my opinion was changed by a friend of mine, who happens to be a re-upholsterer. She had found an old armchair and reupholstered it in a deep dark blue velvet. It was Dan who first spotted it in their home and insisted I give it a try. It looked so cool in their all white apartment and once ensconced in its velvety softness I didn’t want to move. I’ve since been searching for the perfect (read as affordable) secondhand armchair that I can ask her to reupholster for us. I already have a spot in mind for it in our bedroom.

Today I see velvet everywhere I look, it’s become the ubiquitous fabric of the season. One of my favourite brands, HAY, offer their Hackney sofa in a gorgeous dark teal velvet (first image), perfect contrasted against white walls for that simple Scandi look I love. Even Ikea have got in on the trend (three images up), although sadly the Viktigt collection sofa doesn’t appear to be available here in the UK, or has now sold out.
